Thinking of Kai by Lito Solorio

I recently had a discussion with an old Mentor perhaps my first strong Christian Man in my life. He was the type who in 7th grade awkwardly brought up the discussion of purity even though at the time didn't want to hear any of it, but in hindsight see it as a huge blessing. In Jr. High I recall being challenged by God to truly seek him him in a way that called out the question, "What does it take to be a Man of God?" I haven't been able to figure out why God has put such amazing men of God in my life who have personally challenged me when I needed the challenge the most. These men include: my dad, brother, Rod Ristow, Don Hargis, Nathan Morales, David Rutherford, Cameron Unruh, and Dave Smith. Now there are many more that I'm sure I'm not immediately thinking of but have to this point can't imagine better men to have been challenged by. In talking with my old mentor Rod, who I hadn't talked to in years, he mentioned taking his son through raising a Modern Day Knight by Robert Lewis a book that even challenges father's to take their sons through a rite of passage as they are taught what it takes to be a man. I was amused that he shared that since it is easily one of my favorite books and had read it about 3 years ago in trying to continue to answer the question of what God wants from me as a man in marriage and then one day in fatherhood.

I've come to the point where I realize that no Dad is perfect and we all have faults and that at times our kids will pick up some or even can become the greatest critique on our walk with God because there is no hiding from the watchful eyes of a child. I find myself everyday sneaking into Kai's room and praying for this son, I haven't even held yet, that he would passionately seek God in a way that he wouldn't rely on his parents faith. I also pray that the men and women who pour into Kai in his walk with God, who may be teens right now as we speak, would passionately teach him God's truth. I love Kai and sometimes find myself just so excited I literally start jumping up and down. I love my wife and now our son Kai is a product of that Love, I thank God that he has given us this gift. I feel that I am slowly grasping what parents talk about when they say that when you have a child you understand God in a whole new way, since we are his Children. I want to be a Man of God that Kai can look to and never second guess where my heart is, and I pray he'll be that man too!

39 Weeks 2 Days Pregnant!

Well, here I am at 39 Weeks 2 Days Pregnant. I was hoping I wouldn't make it this far into the pregnancy, but alas, my Son is not quite ready to enter the world. The due date is 5 days from now and I have a sneaking suspicion this little one will be showing up late. Perhaps you will see a 40 week pic on here shortly. Or, if we're all very blessed, you will finally see Kai in the flesh! Lito and I are SO excited it's ridiculous. Lito especially. I hear him say, at least a dozen times a day, "I can't wait for Kai!" We've told people on Facebook, if they want to get a text when Kai is born to text Babykai to 41411 and then respond to the message that follows that with a "Y". I believe Lito put a subscription box to the right if you want to join. We do have a short contact list of close family and friends, but I want Lito next to me as much as possible, so we thought this would be the easiest way to spread the news. Physically I'm very uncomfortable, but keeping active. Sleeping and heartburn are still a pain. We went to Branson just yesterday and I walked the whole Branson Landing strip up and down! I was very proud of my accomplishment. Anyhow, we have a doctors appointment tomorrow. We'll see what she says! :)

36 Weeks Pregnant (4 Weeks to Go!)

So, I am now 36 Weeks Pregnant. That makes me one week into my 9th month. Yes, I am ready to have this baby. Emotionally, and for sure physically. There are MANY many many reasons for this. To sum it up, I'm boiling over with anticipation to meet my son, and I'm hurting all over everywhere everyday now. It's really quite bittersweet. I'm getting bigger everyday (as they warned me I would in this last month). I'm right on target in my weight gain. (25 lbs to date). Also, at my last visit, the doc let me know that I am 1cm dilated and 75% effaced. This is normal and good. To have the baby I need to be 10cm and 100%. There are four more weeks for this to progress. Sleeping, I thought couldn't get more painful and difficult. I was wrong. Five pillows are now necessary for tolerable comfort. I find my hands going numb every night now from sleeping on my sides. Plus, I have no choice but to make a bathroom visit 4-5 times per night. This is accomplished by slowly rolling out of bed with every movement drenched in pain. Heartburn has begun to reject any form of relief (Tums, Milk or Zantac..). I cannot sit or stand for too long before it becomes uncomfortable. Shaving my legs has become an Olympic event. I've recently developed these new intense cramps where my thighs connect to my pelvis (wonderful). I don't have as much energy as I usually do, so my compulsive nesting leaves me exhausted. Isn't pregnancy beautiful! Alright, enough complaints- I just wanted to be honest. People don't tell you these things. Pregnancy can be a dirty job at times. Soon and very soon, I will hit the climax of Eve's punishment and then receive one of the greatest blessings of my life. Because of the future end result, I'm able to ignore the day to day grind (to some extent) and push forward. Four more weeks, and we can't wait! Please continue to pray for us. We are now prepared for Kai all around and are just waiting for D-Day! ;)

The past three weeks my son has gotten much stronger. It's still painful to sleep. The doctor says I won't be having a big baby (woo-hoo!) I did find out I'm slightly anemic so I'm taking iron pills now. My pants and skirts don't fit anymore, so I had to get some maternity Capri's for summer. Target has some cute shorts I might get. Even my maternity shirts are shrinking! Just 9 more weeks or so now. I can't wait! Lito and I are going to a maternity photo shoot next Thursday! I'll try to post those pics in a couple weeks or so when we get them. Please keep Kai and I in your prayers as things progress.

Ring Exchange

So the three F's are starting to swell. Face, Feet and Fingers. The finger swelling made me nervous to continue wearing my wedding ring. So on Mother's day, Lito took me out to find a temporary ring. The bottom ring (the one I am currently wearing) is worth $12.50. The top ring is worth....a few thousand. I guess it will have to do for now. :)

Kindness of Old Acquaintances

Lito and I were recently contacted through Facebook by an old acquaintance of ours from high school. Her unmarried name was Kat Bouchard. She is now married and has a handsome little boy named Tristan! In catching up and congratulating each other on life's joys, she offered to mail us a box of Tristan's old baby clothes! We agreed ecstatically! She mailed a box from LA, CA all the way out to Joplin, MO just out of the kindness of her heart! We were tickled pink going through the clothes! I just wanted to share a handful of our favorites with you.

Malachi's First Play

Lito and I just finished up Ozark Christian College's Spring Musical, The Music Man a couple of weeks ago! Lito played the role of Charlie and I was a Pregnant Townswoman. :) It was exhaughsting, but well worth it. I'm sure Kai got an earful throughout the experience. He was always dancing around in my belly during the musical numbers. Thus, we shall call this, Malachi's Musical debut!

My friend Katrina and I went out this past Saturday to look at yard sales. I found a ton of cute baby stuff for CHEAP! Hooray! I even found a couple of Superbaby items which Lito was doubly thrilled about! The little sleeper even has a cape on it! :) Then we found some adorable shoes, including little Nike's and Converse! I am 27 weeks in these beautiful pictures taken by my husband! I still think I'm pretty small for being 6 months, but I'm just fine with that! :) Things are getting a little bit more uncomfortable. When attempting sleep I still fight off charlie horses in my legs, and actually get them in my shoulders now. When I flip from side to side (my only sleeping position options) it feels like I'm lugging a bag of rocks with me in my tummy. Bathroom runs have increased to 3 times per night. I'm still surviving in my normal clothes, but I can tell that day is quickly coming to an end. Now, on a brighter note.... Kai had hiccups recently! I thought perhaps there was something very wrong, or very spectacular about him because I would start feeling these punches in a perfect rhythm that would last minutes at a time! Finally it dawned on me (after all my reading) that the little guy was having hiccups. Lito was tickled to feel them. Some of my friends even got in on the action! LOL! Believe it or not, he has hiccups right now! I'm getting more and more anxious to have him here with us! :)

I recently had a baby shower put on by my closest friends here in Missouri. A friend of mine even came down from Indiana! It was intimate and fun! They made some yummy snacks for us to munch on (including my favorite- strawberries & pineapple with fondue chocolate!)The place was set up like a jungle with hanging monkeys and all(matching our nursery theme).We played a handful of games including; Don't say Baby with clothespins to loose (Won by Whitney), How well do you know the Mother-to-Be (Won by Lauren), and guesstimate the circumference of mom's belly with yarn (Won by Sue)! Although my college friends are poor like me, they were very generous in blessing Lito and I with lots of fun and needed gifts for our little Malachi. The girls followed up the shower with a girls night out to Applebees where Kai and I enjoyed steak and potatoes! MMMM Baby! Then we went and saw 17 Again where my preconceptions of tween star Zach Efron were broken. That boy can act! And hilarious film btw! Overall, an amazing day!

This is me at 24 weeks pregnant. Lito took me out for my birthday to Lambert's Cafe in Springfield! We had a gaggle of friends come along with us. It was lots of fun and the food was soooooo good! Then, as tradition demands, we squeezed the newbies (Gregg, Charlie and Nick) into the phone booth. I also had my first near fainting experience as a pregnant lady. I had an amazing Baby Shower thrown by; my Sister-In-Law/Best Friend, Sheri Marotta, One of my "Moms" and future Nonnie to Malachi, Paulette Bradford, and every one's favorite Auntie Pat! It was a beautiful day out at Clovis Christian Church. The centerpieces were strewn with gorgeous dyed blue daisies, accenting the "boy" theme of the party. There was vibrant blue and green everywhere you looked! The table of food appeared to have been catered by a classy company (even though it was lovingly prepared by our very own Sheri, Paulette, and even a little help from my Brother-In-Law, Johnny). Sheri came up with a number of entertaining and (per my request) humiliating games. We had some of the manliest men in attendance race desperately to chug down soda from a baby bottle. Curtis Bruno came out our champion. This was followed by four ladies spoon feeding their blindfolded partners mysterious baby food. Dean and Glenda Christensen won the taste test contest. If I remember the flavors correctly, we had; Lasagna (who knew!), Prunes, Beef, Strawberry Banana and Chicken & Vegetables. Yummy! We also each got a famous Mom placed on our backs and had to guess who we were. Of all people, I ended up being Mother Theresa! Lito turned out to be Cindy Crawford herself. It was an exciting day with family, friends and lots of gifts for our baby boy! I couldn't have asked for a better event to celebrate our little Malachi!

Our very good friend and mentor, Anita Ford, threw us a beautiful baby shower! It was held at Victoria Rose Cottage in Old Town Clovis. It was a pleasant surprise, since we had never even heard of this quaint (and yet extravagant) Tea Parlor. You walked in, greeted by two Brits dressed in Victorian Garb, ready to seat you. They were really from England (with the fun accents and all!) The tea was AMAZING. We were started off with a Tropical Fruit Tea, and later had a Creme Brulee Tea. Yummy! The dish of delicate finger foods was just perfect for the setting. The dessert (all homemade) was to die for! I had Creme Brulee and Lito enjoyed his dessert and Tracy Swan's. A cheesecake and a lemon cake! I felt like a little girl playing dress up and having a tea party! We loved the company of our guests and were blessed by there many gifts! It was a Baby Shower to remember!

22 Weeks Pregnant (5 Months)

So, I am now in my 22nd week. This picture was taken Thursday night. He's pushing out a little more than before. He feels bigger, that's for sure. I am aware that I'm still considered 'small' for how far along I am. Even at my doctor check up yesterday they were surprised at how tiny I was. But I'm gaining weight like I should be, and my midwife thinks I'm just fine, so I'm not worried. It's wonderful to talk to my baby and call him by his name now! I can see my stomach change shapes as he moves around. He kicks and punches a ton whenever I relax or try to sleep. I love it! My cats still think I'm talking to them when Lito's not home and I'm chatting to Kai. I've also noticed that when I first get up in the morning, my belly is really round because gravity has sent him to a central location near my belly button. I'll try to take a morning picture to show you sometime. PS: Heartburn is not my best friend, but it loiters around like it is these days! So there you have it!

It's a BOY!!!

Be prepared to welcome our firstborn son, Malachi Lito Solorio this summer! We went in this morning nearly jumping out of our skin with excitement. After watching our ultrasound technician, Nita, take all of the measurements, we were already on cloud nine. We saw little hands and little feet. We saw it's heart beating. But the baby was really well behaved for the most part. He only pushed back on the device a couple of times. Then finally she looked to see that he was a boy! Lito jumped up overwhelmed with joy! I sat stunned for a second taken off base thinking it would be a girl. Then gratitude flooded over me. I didn't realized how much I wanted a boy! What a HUGE gift from God! Then came time for her to try and get a 3D shot of his little face. Oddly, he was sleeping on his tummy with his arms and legs tucked under him, and his face was face down away from the ultrasound. Thankfully she found a good angle from the side and did her best to get a shot. Our favorite is the one above. We even think we can see a little grin. His heart rate was 167 bpm. Everything about him is healthy! So there you have it! Thank you everyone who participated in the baby sex pole. Majority did vote for a boy- regardless of the pole we had set up on the blog. 20 Weeks Pregnant (Half Way There!)

So, I made it half way! I am now 20 weeks pregnant today! As you can see, our baby is growing! Hooray! We only have a couple more days until we have a chance at revealing the sex of our munchkin! Please continue praying that the baby will cooperate with us so we can find out.

This week has been wonderful, once more. Baby likes to dance when music is on. Thank you American Idol. Sleeping, if you can call it that, is becoming even less comfortable. I've upgraded to two pillows now. One tucked between my legs and the other under my waist behind me. Good news is, I've been told it only gets worse. :) But I know baby is worth every ache!

For making it half way Lito, my amazing Husband, took me out for dinner at a quaint little restaurant in downtown Joplin called Red Onion Cafe. Very romantic setting with wonderful food. Then afterwards we finished up with some dessert at Freddy's, the new burger joint in town. It was nice to have a reason to get out of my sweats. Lito and I daydreamed all night about having our little one here with us one day soon. Stay tuned for the Monday announcement of baby Malachi or Penelope! We love you guys!

19 Weeks Pregnant

This picture was taken Feb 20th when I was 19 weeks along. The baby seemed to have a mini-growth spurt. Things are moving along a little bit faster in the belly department now. Although, I still don't look pregnant pregnant- I'm getting there. I wear lots of sweats and still fit into most of my pants-unbuttoned. Baby is still really active and I love it! We find out whether we are having a firstborn son or daughter in 5 short days! Please be praying our little one will be sitting just right so the ultrasound can reveal the sex. Then I can stop calling it 'Baby' and call it Malachi or Penelope! Hooray! I can now visually see the baby kick or punch from the outside. It's sooo cool! Lito can see it too! This little one is getting so much stronger. I fear the future of my ribs!

18 Weeks Pregnant

Well, I'm 18 weeks pregnant and happy as a clam. That's right! I still don't have much of a belly, but I feel my little one move more and more everyday, and I LOVE it! It's little kicks and punches make me smile. On an amusing note, I put Lito's hand on my belly almost every night so he might feel the baby kick. It seems whenever he puts his hand on my belly, the baby remains perfectly still. Then he gives up and goes in the other room, and right when he leaves the baby starts kicking and punching again! It makes me laugh. It almost feels like the baby is doing it on purpose. I've also discovered the baby seems to react to music. Fun Stuff! :)

The Baby Moves!

So last night as Tiff and I were preparing to sleep We felt the baby kick the hardest it's ever kicked. It was really amazing. I continued to talk to the baby and seemed to receive a response from the baby by more little kicks and jabs. It's exciting to go from little flutters to full out kicks! I can only remember Adam Sandler in Billy Madison, "He's gonna be a soccer player, I can feel him kicking!"

17 Weeks Pregnant (Four Months)

Someone call Guinness, I could be the flattest stomached pregnant woman alive! I mean look at this! I've got nothin! Lito and I can tell there is a little rounding down low happening. It feels like the baby is growing faster than my belly. I can feel it doing flips and I know it needs more room. I suppose I could take it as a compliment. My abs were just so tight, the belly is having a hard time popping. Or I could give birth to the smallest baby known to man. All sarcasm aside, I'm okay that my belly hasn't popped yet. I told my little one to take all the time it needs. Meanwhile, I don't have to worry about maternity clothes! I don't have morning sickness anymore, although once in a blue moon I don't feel well. My appetite has returned. I eat a lot more, but usually smaller meals. My doc says I need to gain a little more weight. I'm trying man. I eat whatever I want, I just can't seem to eat large portions of anything. This baby needs 300 more calories a day than what I normally need. Anyhow, loving pregnancy at this point. You'll be seeing more pics week to week as I'm hoping we'll start seeing a more definite "bump". PS: Thank God for sweatpants!

I Feel My Baby!

A few days ago, I thought I felt a flutter in my belly while playing guitar hero with Lito. The next day, I was positive I felt a flick and a poke. Then yesterday we took some friends (In Pic from left to right; Chris, Lito, Charlie, Gregg) to see a couple local sites and while we were hiking to "Mother Nature's Crack" and "The Falls" I felt the baby turn over. It was an odd pressure and movement. That night I went to bed and put my hand on my belly to feel numerous pokes and turns! I couldn't get enough of it. Lito had fallen asleep next to me and I woke him up, grabbed his hand and told him to feel. Sure enough, he felt our little one banging around in there! I'm so excited! This baby seems so much more real to me now! I just had to share this new experience! ;)

So last night as Tiff and I sat in bed, she had me place my hand on her stomach as she has been feeling some flutters from our baby. As I sat there in suspense the baby decided to do nothing. Yet perhaps by my touch the baby was soothed and became relaxed. Then after awhile I felt the ever so light movement of our baby, right underneath my ring finger. This only made me smile and realize that this baby has been a long time coming, I thank God everyday that Tiff and I have a relationship of Trust and Commitment that is ready to bring this Baby into the world. Stay tuned as March 2nd we discover if the baby is a boy or a girl!

I couldn't contain my excitement for very long. I decided I had to tell him that night. So I contacted my closest friend here in Joplin, Katrina Coquillard, to help me plot. I needed an alibi to go out and get the things I needed (a card, candles, baby outfits and an arrow). After a massive struggle to get Trevor (Katrina's husband) out of the house and get Lito alone (I'll share that story later) I finally had everything prepared! I'm Pregnant!

The time has come for Lito and I to bring a Baby Solorio into the world. God heard the longing in our hearts and has blessed us with a gift. On the morning of November 8th I took a test and aced it. "Pregnant" the Clear Blue Stick told me. A wave of euphoria washed over me and nothing else in the world mattered but the miracle growing inside of me. We're excited to share our experience with you as God grows our new baby over the next 9 months. This first video is that fateful morning when I discovered there would be a third added to our family!

8 Weeks Pregnant

So I am 8 weeks pregnant here. I can tell a difference from last week. I'm more pudgy for sure (and I've not been able to eat much- so I'm thinking it's not just chub..) I still get morning sickness off and on all day. I do have better days more recently, however. We have our first appointment in 2 days! I hope I'll have an ultrasound to show you then. First Pair of Maternity Pants!

So I bought my first pair of Maternity Pants Today! I know it's early, but most of my pants are uncomfortably snug. So Lito and I made the trip to Motherhood! They actually fit me now when I'm not showing. At the store they had a belly you can attach to yourself to see how they'll fit in a few months. These babies should last me a while! And they are waaaaayyy comfortable! I'm talking better-than-sweats-will-wear-them-even-after-baby's-born comfortable!

7 Weeks Pregnant Morning Sickness Galore!

At 5 weeks I noticed no transitions in my body. That has since changed. I knew I wouldn't get by without the loving touch of morning sickness. I say now, without exaggeration, that starting at 6 weeks I caught a lovely flu that transitioned into morning sickness. Since then I have been nauseous all day every day, but thankfully I never throw up. Although you may not be able to see any growth from the pic, my jeans are not comfortable any more, they squeeze. I am enjoying other rounding benefits, however. This makes up for the 24/7 queasiness. I want to nap all the time and I go to bed early whenever possible. Even though I must live with the ickyness, I find it to be a blessing because it reminds me that my firstborn is growing at a demanding rate inside me. Hunching over the toilet is too little a sacrifice for such a gift. BTW- We have our first appointment December 11th @ 9:30AM to see Doc Linda Punch at Freeman Hospital! I'll be around 9 weeks then. I hope we can get an ultrasound! Yay!

Lito's Thoughts...

As I sit here on thanksgiving day, I can't help but think of my childhood and all the memories of traveling from Fresno to visit family in San Jose or Visalia. I can even recall my dad coming into my room and slowly picking me up from my slumber and placing me in the car as we prepared for our long haul out of town. The relationship with my father has always been one I look back on for strength and encouragment. Like the time some family members were upset with me for having values and convictions my father stood by my side and with a mighty roar of a lion protecting his cubs I felt secure. Yet even though my father seemed so strong to me it was the times of his gentleness and kindness that I appreciate the most. As I prepare this journey of Fatherhood I can't help but think of this future baby as one I can just love and care for all the time. Tiffany and I often look at our pasts and see where we are and are grateful for the challenges and hard times we've been through because of who it's made us. And all we want for this baby is to, "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." -Prov. 22:6. this seems like a lot to take in and I don't want to force any of this on that future baby. All I can see as being the way to do this is by loving them s my parents loved me. I would never doubt that my parents would love me even when I had bad news they always made me feel safe in sharing my shortcomings, failures, and even sins. I thank God for that has made me a man that is transparent and honest. In a conversation with my father just days ago he unbeknowst to Tiffany's pregnancy shared a story of me when he first took me to Mexico to visit the family, explaining he didn't know what to do with me because babies didn't come with an instruction manual. All I can say my parents did pretty good making up as they went. Hopefully the things I've learned from them the things Tiffany has learned from her Mom and family we can take God's word and allow it to be a shinning light in our house for our children, "as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." -Joshua 24:15

5 Weeks Pregnant

This is me at 5 weeks pregnant. I don't see a difference yet. This was just last week, and there was really no physical sign that I was pregnant. I didn't have any symptoms that I can recall. I'm sure things will get more interesting as we go along. I am however still in shock that there's a baby in there. This week (according to What to Expect When You're Expecting) the baby resembles a tadpole the size of an orange seed and is forming it's heart and circulatory system! Yay baby!

Out to Celebrate

After telling Lito, we went out with Trevor and Katrina to a new restaurant in town called Wasabi to celebrate! It's a Japanese tepenyaki (spelling?) place. We loved it!

I couldn't contain my excitement for very long. I decided I had to tell him that night. So I contacted my closest friend here in Joplin, Katrina Coquillard, to help me plot. I needed an alibi to go out and get the things I needed (a card, candles, baby outfits and an arrow). After a massive struggle to get Trevor (Katrina's husband) out of the house and get Lito alone (I'll share that story later) I finally had everything prepared! The video to follow is my very impromptu announcement to Lito that we were pregnant and his reaction. Enjoy!
